What you need to know

Safe sex is any sexual activity where body fluids containing HIV cannot pass into the bloodstream of yourself or another person.  Some activities, like kissing, are naturally safe.  Others, like intercourse, require careful planning or the use of condoms to ensure they are safe.

That's the official definition of safe sex.  It's only a starting point, and you may want to ask yourself whether it's broad enough for you.  For example, it only covers HIV, not other sexually transmitted infections.  You might decide that safe sex should always be voluntary (not rape) and shouldn't cause emotional or social harms, such as shame or gossip afterwards.

This page provides links to information to help you make informed decisions about your current or future sexual practice.  We hope it will always include safe sex!  But everyone's only human, so you'll also find information about services and support in case you need them.

Sexual health means having confidence that you're not carrying or passing on any sexually transmitted infections.  Once you start having sex, you should get a checkup at least once a year, or sooner if something starts acting weird downstairs.  Remember, if it itches or burns, go to a doctor and get it checked!

If you are over sixteen, your visits to a doctor are confidential, even from your parents/family.  But it's totally cool if you'd prefer to see another doctor.  You can even visit a sexual health clinic in Melbourne.
